Holiday Inn Express Midtown
Midtown, NY A 33 foot wide vacant lot, steps from Fifth Avenue, was considered “un-buildable” due to the narrow footprint for a parcel zoned for high-rise development. A novel, lateral scissor-stair configuration was devised for a six-room floor plate. The 21-story building was built non-union in flat plate concrete, and sold profitably to a national hotel company, within hours of receiving a temporary Certificate of Occupancy. The façade’s warm gray brick, chosen to blend the narrow building into its midtown context, is subdivided into three-story high, nine-square grids bordered by metal bands, featuring a center balcony.
