“Not long after a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, architect Gene Kaufman entered an American Institute of Architecture-sponsored design contest with a timely theme: disaster relief housing with a potentially permanent function. Kaufman’s submission–self-sustaining prefabricated homes that can be folded into 8 by 16 foot rectangles and hitched to the back of cars–was named a first place winner.”
