Pace University Residence Hall
Downtown, NY The conversion of a fifteen-story building into a student dormitory directly for Pace University in downtown Manhattan created housing for 270 students. The shared apartment format upgraded university housing options from conventional institutional dormitories to modern state-of-the-market apartments with full kitchens, private bathrooms and living rooms in every unit. The high yield of housing units was a result of a complex intervention to replace non-code complying open fire stairs with new fire stair towers in a former light court, suspended 15 stories from new roof trusses in order to avoid new pile foundations on a site adjacent to a NYC subway tunnel.
