Suny Outback
This 50,000 square foot four-story dormitory provides 210 beds and the campus’s most upscale dormitory living experience, with eight student lounges and seminar rooms, computer room, laundry, elevators, recycling system, and air-conditioning. The predominant room type is a two-person room with private bath, but the building includes four-person suites, one-person rooms, handicapped accessible rooms, and faculty apartments. The exterior concept is a metaphorical “gateway” in brick, matching adjacent dormitories, framing a central portion of the building conceived as a pattern of organic materials and textures. A central two-story lounge with a curved facade cantilevers over the main entrance. The architectural commission was awarded by competitive juried competition. The entire building above grade was constructed as 68 factory built modules set over the course of two weeks on site-built foundations, greatly limiting the liability of on-campus construction.
