Washington Street Apartments Building
Meat Packing District, NY   new 11-story residential building comprising 68 rental apartments and parking garage was built with steel and precast concrete plank construction and occupies 68,000 square feet.  Complicated pile foundations, threaded through massive underground piers and remediated brownfield excavations, render buildable this “soft” site by the former shoreline.  A glazed “void” at the lower floors and the elevated trestle in the landscaped plaza recall the elevated freight railroad “High-Line” that formerly transversed the site. The two-story penthouse, designed in corrugated metal and ultimately realized in corbelled brick, extends the train iconography as a metaphorical crown.
